If unusual-looking white spots appear on your teeth, you may not want to hesitate about going to the dentist. These spots could be the beginnings of cavities. The dentist can more easily treat a cavity the sooner you meet with them. We would also like to offer some advice that can help you keep the cavity under control. This advice can also help you prevent cavities.
Our advice is for you to get phosphate, calcium and fluoride to your teeth. You can do this by using a toothpaste and mouth rinse that contain these minerals.
Phosphate, calcium and fluoride are important parts of your tooth enamel, and your teeth can replace them through a process called remineralization. Fluoride can be especially important in this process. It adds strength to the enamel when it gets absorbed, but it can also increase the rate of remineralization by helping to bring more phosphate and calcium into the enamel.
The enamel better withstands cavities by strengthening itself with these minerals. A cavity’s progress can be slowed this way, granting more time for our dentists, Drs. E. Alexander White & Bradford R. Thweatt, to treat it before it progresses further.
If you do get a cavity, we are happy and ready to help you deal with it here at Sandston Comprehensive Dentistry in Sandston, Virginia. Please call 804-737-4444 to let us know what you need and to set up an appointment.
