Flossing: Are There Alternatives?

Posted .

It is important for you to floss if you’re interested in maintaining a healthy mouth. Flossing can reach places that your toothbrush can’t get to. But there are many individuals who struggle with flossing for a number of reasons. Fortunately, alternative options such as water floss can help everyone maintain great oral health.

Toothbrushes can’t clean very effectively between your teeth. So if you don’t floss, you can’t prevent plaque buildup between your teeth. This can lead to inflamed gums, and eventually to gum disease. Gum disease can also lead to a number of serious problems, including tooth loss, consistent bad breath, and loss of supporting bone structure.

If you struggle to floss—whether because of shaky hands, gag reflex, or another issue—there are a few other options that could help you. For example, you could think about using a floss pick instead of traditional floss. Similarly, a water pick may meet your needs. A water pick directs a stream of water, removing plaque and decay from between your teeth. These can be easier for some individuals to use. Many consider these options more comfortable than other types of floss.
